Shaping Shawls Anna Dalvi 9780979201769 Books
One of the best shawl books on the market. It gives the reader to freedom and basic shaping knowledge to create his/her own design. Furthermore, you do not have to try and knit all of the shawls to come to the level which you are able to design own, the explanations suffice to get the courage to start. The explanations are clear, the paper quality is high, the pictures are beautiful. Both charts and written explanations are provided for the patterns. If I had known that this books existed earlier, I would have definitely bought less books to knit shawls. Yes, there are no patterns for circular and semi-circular shawls. However, when everything else this book already offers is considered, I believe that is of a minor drawback. Furthermore, the mechanics of circular and semi-circular shawls is very different from the mechanics of the shapes of shawls the book offers. The visio-spatial understanding that this book will provide you with derives a lot from the continuum of the shapes introduced. This understanding that you will develop will be the key to the courage that will lead you to design your very own shawl. This book will also provide you with skills to alter other patterns that you will find in other books.Product details

Shaping Shawls Anna Dalvi 9780979201769 Books Reviews
Beginners of lace knitting, budding shawl designers or the just plain curious knitter, will be drawn into Anna Dalvi's book with the absolute pleasure of having your questions finally answered. Have you ever wondered just where to put your increases to reach the desired shape you want, without utterly destroying the beautiful lace patterns in the process? Are mathematics not your strong suit? The explanations given in 'Shaping Shawls' bring you a greater understanding of exactly how, to break this process down. Anna truly simplifies the art of shawl design for her readers. I believe there will be many 'Ahha' moments as you peruse the pages of 'Shaping Shawls'.
The brilliantly coloured shawls, are quite eye catching and certainly do enhance Anna's designs. For those beginners in the crowd, the smaller projects in this book, are not too daunting to try. Readers cannot come away from this book, without wanting to knit at least one of the shawls and there is no question you will certainly have a very clear understanding of shawl construction. If you are not interested in designing shawls you will still enjoy knitting the projects within.
This book is a must have for any knitter's library. Owners of this book will of course hope there is a second book in the very near future, on circular shawl shapings...
Shaping Shawls provides the logistics of shawl shaping without being overwhelming. Anna Dalvi explains how to analyze lace patterns and shape 10 styles of shawl 2 styles of rectangular shawls, 2 styles of square shawls, and 6 types of triangular shawl. Each construction style has a written description of it's shaping method, a diagram showing the placement of increases or decreases, and a charted pattern for a shawl using that shaping. Dalvi discusses how the shawl shaping affects the lace patterning when worn as well as her preferred methods for casting on and binding off when working shawls. I do wish that the book had included a section on circular or half-circle shawl shaping (my main reason for 4, not 5 stars), but even without it I think this book is a great resource.
The book starts with the simpler constructions and then proceeds to show how to add to and manipulate the canvas space, or space of the shawl available for lace patterning. I think that "canvas space" is a very appropriate term, as Dalvi has taken the art of knit shawl shaping and made it accessible to those wanting to take the plunge into creating their own shawl designs.
Besides being an informative resource, Shaping Shawls is a lovely book. The pictures are stunning, and I wish some of them were available as poster size prints. Shaping shawls is available as a traditional book as well as in pdf and e-book formats.
*There is errata available for the Magic Lanterns pattern on the Cooperative Press website. One error for one column in one pattern. Most magazines aren't that good.
I bought this book for reference (I love lace knitting). It was informative and the patterns included were really pretty. I would highly recommend it to any shawl/lace knitter.
The photo reproductions are so dark as to be unusable. The paper is very poor quality--so poor that the printing shows through to the other side of page..
I will buy all3 again as I keep 1 copy and the other as work books I love the information in it
If I didn't already have many books on ordinary shawl shaping, I'd be happy I ordered this book. I do though, and it turns out that this book doesn't cover the kinds of unusual (Faroese) shawl shaping I was led to believe it would, so I'm regretting I paid so much for it. It's photo and paper quality is substandard, otherwise it would be giftable to a shawl knitting novice.
Patterns are good directions not bad. Pictures are horrible! Black backgrounds, dark lighting, make it very difficult to even look at the shawls.
